Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you perform pre/post-DUI or court-ordered assessments & evaluations?

Yes. I can do these in California and have done them for many people who have had an out-of-state DUI. Read more here.

I was sentenced to complete a certain number of substance abuse counseling sessions, can I do those through your services?

Yes. I have many clients who have been ordered to complete a certain number of sessions.

Do you accept insurance?

No. For more information on my fees and insurance policy, visit my Fees page.

Am I required to a drug test?

No. Drug testing is optional.

Do you accept Medi-Cal or Medicare?

No. For more information on my fees and insurance policy, visit my Fees page.

Will my insurance reimburse me for out-of-network services?

Some of my clients do get reimbursed for out-of-network services. Many do not. I don't guarantee reimbursement and I don't take responsibility for insurance claims or payments. I can provide you with a superbill for services.

Can you prescribe medications?

No. Only physicians and psychiatrists can prescribe medication. I recommend all clients visit a doctor to discuss stopping or moderating substance use. If you would like a referral to a board-certified addiction medical doctor, I can provide you with that information. Several are available on my Resources page.

How effective is counseling by video or phone?

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests video and phone counseling can be as or more effective than in-person counseling. Visit my page "Effectiveness" for more information.

I'm not sure my friend or loved one is ready for help, what should I do?

Call me to set up a free 30 min. phone consultation. I can go over your options and provide you with suggestions to help you get your friend or loved one help.

What is your success rate?

If any provider or program provides you with an exact success rate, that should be a significant red flag. It is difficult to measure that and would change from day-to-day. There are many different factors that contribute to a person's success and many definitions of what success is as it relates to substance abuse. What I can tell you is that if the person seeking help desires to make positive changes in their life, and there is a good relationship between the counselor and the client - there is a good chance that positive change can occur.

I am required to receive an alcohol or drug evaluation, or counseling sessions mandated by the court or a state agency, can you help me?

Yes, in most cases. I will need to review the actual court requirements or order before determining if I can provide the service.

Do you work with adolescents?

No. I only work with adults.
